Setting of “Roads Untraveled”, a fan-made story set in the world of Fallout, New Vegas specifically (~10 years after the battle of Hoover Dam). It’s a postapocalyptic setting with new factions ruling what is left of the world, filled with radioactive wastelands, dangerous monsters and even worse people, with a few glimpses of hope and progress. Located south around the Salton Sea and Mexicali, at the American/Mexican border. Everyone is fighting for scraps, but it looks like some places have moved past the “apocalyptic” state of their world and new societies are being developed despite what’s around them.

Both NCR and Ceasar’s Legion are still butting heads, still fighting for their right to rule the land, but the location is more removed from the events of New Vegas. NCR has just started making their presence in the area with local gangs and other existing societies having more to say. The story follows two protagonists showing troubled viewpoints from both sides, while exploring their own insecurities and challenges (of which there are many).

Amberly (or Amber for short) is the daughter of refugees from the Capital Wasteland who came to the NCR in search of a better life. She has a younger brother named Matt. Both of their parents are dead, having been killed during a raider attack on their caravan. She and her brother grew up on a large farm. The only other surviving member of her family is an uncle, who works as a guide for motorized caravans.

She’s a tall, athletic woman with green eyes and red hair. Back when she lived on the farm, she had a very feminine figure. In comparison to a lot of people of the wastes, she was msot likely one of the healthiest young women in the area. Originally, her skin was quite pale – as is typical for redheads – but due to the change in climate, she developed a deep, permanent tan. This process was incredibly painful during her childhood, involving constant, slow-healing sunburns before her skin finally took on its current shade and gained a degree of resistance to the sun.
After joining the army and experiencing various adventures, her body became more muscular and she acquired numerous scars. These scars are a source of deep insecurity for her, often driving her to try and prove to herself that she’s still attractive to herself and others.

Amber often acts very rashly and makes snap judgments about people; it frequently takes a great deal for her to change her opinion of someone, especially if her first impression was negative. Despite having spent most of her life surrounded by loving parents – and later, guardians – on a farm, she remains inherently distrustful and suspicious of others. This stems in part from the events that led to her parents’ deaths, and in part from the experiences she went through afterwards.

The loss of her parents left her without an authority figure just as she was beginning to come of age. Despite the efforts of the family that took her and her brother in, Amber spent most of her time on the farm rebelling against everyone. Even as the punishments grew increasingly severe, she would sneak away to a distant, nearby settlement, spending her nights at a local bar. Her dissolute nature manifested on the farm as well. Her only serious romantic relationship ended in tragedy for her partner—an outcome for which she still blames herself, even as the events of the story unfold. This reinforced her conviction that forming a permanent bond with anyone is a bad idea.

Her life on the road – traveling with parents who made a living through trade and scavenging ruins for valuable items – taught her many of the skills necessary for survival in the wasteland. Later, her time on the farm provided her with practical knowledge regarding machinery, plants, and animals. After joining the NCR, months of intensive military training transformed her into a formidable adversary. This unique combination of skills, coupled with her inherent perseverance and determination, enabled her to join a reconnaissance unit right at the start of her military career, which is where she met Ruth.
