The Revenants: Kingslayer (DnD 5e homebrew)

Yana was born in a town of Junryk, Savonia, a country with warm climate of neverending plains, shores rich in marine trade, and near-desert sands in the far north. Her family lived and worked near the docks and were one of the more respected fishermen in the area. During childhood a war had broken out with The Empire – a high-elven society from the neighbouring land, armed with technology never seen before, with red dragons on their shields. Her home hasn’t known peace for the last 20-something years, even though for the rest of the continent the war has calmed down and some regions find “war” to be an exagerration, she and her family had lived a life under harsh occupation.

Her family survived the initial raid, and officially, never stepped out of line under the new rule. Yana and her brother, Emil, joined the resistance that had quickly formed to relay information about the enemy to other places around the continent. The siblings had managed to form a small artificer’s den where they worked to create tools, weapons, and armour for both the Empire and their own. In secret they gathered and analyzed Empirian tech and artefacts, hoping to adapt their magic and functionalities for their own purposes. One day they got a hold of a piece of crucial equipment from a dreadnought – an iron-clad, enormous battleship anchored nearby. Removing this part rendered it partially inoperable. It seemed powerful and they intended to turn it into a weapon for the sake of an upcoming uprising. Unfortunately, the device’s magic was too unpredictable, and one miscalculation ended up blowing up their home, burying her brother, mother, and nearly herself under the rubble.

Yana grabbed the now dormant device and ran, using the chaos of the destruction to slip past the guards and escape the borders of her country using her one and only chance, blind in one eye after the magical blast. She hid away past enemy lines within Savonia and later in the Aegeraum Kingdom where she managed to find aid for her wounds and created a device to more-or-less regain her eyesight and strength. Her armour serves as protection, a weapon, and a device to help her move her arms as efficiently as she used to be able to. She never learned what had happened to her father and people, but she’d long accepted that she’d never see them again, at least until the war had come to an end.

Her mission now is to figure out what the device does and get it to someone who can help her finish what she and her brother had started. In particular, she needs to learn what the small, mysterious, red crystals embedded along the surface of the device are, and exactly why they pulsate like a heartbeat.

[Ancient times]
The story takes place on a continent once ruled by four main races: elves, dwarves, nagas, and [xxx]. The world struggled in a war with dragons, who brought all the other races as their armies to the continent (including humans and beastfolk). The conflict forced the four ruling peoples to either fight or live underground, leaving whole systems of tunnels and cities below the surface, as well as defend fortresses and magic towers all around the land.

At the peak of the conflict, a group of archmages performed a ritual spell that destabilized magic across the continent. In one blast, all the dragons were turned to stone, the elves’ near-immortality was taken away, and the nagas and [xxx] ceased to exist. Since then, no one has seen an intelligent dragon in at least a thousand years. Having no way to escape the continent and no dragonfolk to rule them, the numerous other races started to call the war-ruined land their new home, while the elves became divided into subterranean drows and surface kingdoms.

Elves and humans eventually began rediscovering magic and “standardized” the division into specific schools. Although each culture had their own depictions and names for the Gods, the pantheon was somewhat classified. A number of countries and kingdoms were formed throughout the continent, ranging from racially diversified regions, to those solely human, or elven, or else.

[Present day]
A war always finds its way into peoples’ lives, sooner or later. After about a thousand years of relative peace, a new threat has come to the continent in the form of heavily-armoured dreadnaughts, never-before known magic weapons, and cunning infiltrators, all under the name of The Hazarian Empire. They hit the shores hard and quickly gained land in several countries, before meeting strong resistance and halting war efforts for the next ~20years of occupation. Those not actively influenced by their presence had already started to wave their hands at the war, while the Empirian spies make their way further into the continent, causing damage no one is even aware of… until a few seemingly random groups of people began to take action against this stagnancy.

[Kingslayer campaign]
With the help of newfound friends, Yana had uncovered a whole spy network in one major city within the Kingdom. Together they found out it was possibly the biggest hub of Empire’s activity this far from the front lines, the source of all inflitration within Aegeraum. With the help of local guard, a few strategic contacts within the city and its ruling class, a lot of luck and brute force, they managed to pin point their location and storm the hub, critically halting Empire’s efforts across multiple regions.
Yana also came in contact with the local artificer, a true legend, who will help her discover the true nature of the artefact she’s carrying, hoping to at last bring it to the front lines and help change the course of fate.

[Personality]
Miryana always introduces herself per the shortened name of Yana. She’s paranoid of her past catching up to her and it’s hard for her to find people to trust. She’d found herself alone, in a foreign country, carrying a dangerous artefact the local mages would kill for to get it, let alone the Empirian spies if they ever learned what she had stolen from them. She’s not great with people partly because today her appearance scares them off, and before, it had always been her brother who did the talking. This is not an ideal way to be in a new world where she knows she needs to find allies to survive, but she’s learning.

Despite her hardened self and prejudice towards strangers, deep down Yana craves acceptance and safety, but her mission always comes first. She has a more charming and sweet side which shows in her great care over maintaining a snake construct she created as her companion years ago. His name is Coilspring. She’s overall good with animals and currently has a horse named Łatka/Patch. She can be quite protective over the people she finds worth working with. Some of those people were Fernir, Boar, Ingrid, and Rebecca, who she’d recently stumbled upon. Their plans to get rid of Empirian spies conveniently aligned with hers and over the span of a few weeks, they’d managed to accomplish a lot in this regard, and more. Although the group had by now gone their separate ways, the experiences helped her set a new direction to help complete her mission.

[Appearance notes]
Yana wears her hair unkempt and wild, flowing past her waistline, and always bundles them up into a big bun while working on her projects. She constantly wears a thick cape sewn out of different pieces of fabric that covers her gear and body. The goal here is to make her look unappealing, average, and stronger than she is.
Under all those layers of clothing there is a whole-body armour she initially started creating with her brother, which hides her overall fragile frame. After her body got blasted by the magical explosion, she’d modified the armour to not only protect her, but help her move when her damaged muscles are failing. It’s an arcane armour with a gem in the middle of her chest that serves as a lightning weapon and magical battery. She always hides Coilspring wrapped around her waist or over her shoulders, carries a bag of holding and a metal quarterstaff.
The device/half mask on her face is magical and helps her see with the damaged eye. It can cast Identify and lets her look through Coilspring’s eyes and control him with it.
