Delivered as an egg to an obscure necromantic cult somewhere on the fringes of society, her hatching has always been considered a sort of a miracle and proof of the cult Patron’s power. The people that raised her always said it was very special to have received such a gift and they intended to make the best of it to the cult’s needs. Not that anyone was very kind to her in her rearing as the cult’s ways were quite harsh and single minded – to grow a strong warrior and keeper of tradition in order to spread the word about their Patron to the outside world someday. Thankfully, she wasn’t alone in this mission. Around the same time as Petra appeared, a tiefling boy was born inside the cult under the name of Gravis. The dragon and the devil were paired to grow up together as siblings, or more so, as two parts of one. They ate together, they trained and fought in tandem, studied at the same time, and were sat at the same pew during daily sermons. While the tiefling was taught the ways of dark magic and studied ancient tomes, Petra was hardened to wield a blade and be her mage’s shield with a flick of her own magic. After years of never leaving the cult’s bounds, they were finally assigned to set out on a mission. They had to retrieve something sacred to their Patron and return it to the altar, all the while spreading the Patron’s good will of promised afterlife (or lichdom) to anyone that would follow him. Petra also has her own quest in the midst of it all – she wants to know where she came from. She’d gone through many books about dragons and dragonborns and has since found no mention of crystal kin like herself. However, a few weeks after leaving the cult they were faced with the reality of a world that didn’t revolve around necromancy and dark magic, and both were swiftly thrown into jail and relocated into a convict settlement where the campaign itself takes place. They formed a party of two warlocks, a reborn cleric, and a gnome artificer.

The Kingdom of Tuzmadar has a problem. Its current and long-reigning King, an ancient phoenix aarakocra, is nearing his day to be reborn again. A normal phoenix behaviour, one could say, yet the older the person is, the more powerful the flames that revive them. The last time this happened a portion of his land became a gaping crater that has since been filled with seawater.

Everyone knows this cannot happen again, and so, finally, a decision has been made. A convict settlement was established in a winding canyon down south, where a forge is being built to contain the King’s next rebirth. The settlement has a life of its own, with self-sustaining villages, a fortified town, and an academy for mages. Aside from its own dangers and wild inhabitants, the canyon is guarded from the top by towering statues that will strike anyone who dares to escape the place on their own.

[basically, if you know the Gothic 1 or 2 games, you get the general vibe]

[Personality]
Despite her religious and harsh upbringing, no priest could ever take the rowdiness out of Petra. She’s curious, always in your face, always somewhere she shouldn’t be and joking about things she’s too ignorant of for her own good. She’s a towering, loud dragonborn that uses her size and charismatic behaviour to her advantage and will take on any challenge. Kindness and empathy are not exactly her strong suits and she can come off as rude more often than not. This is the way she likes to be, if only to play on people’s nerves, but she also learned to know when to step back. Her prime mission is to protect Gravis and getting herself into trouble just for show is not worth it if it’s to threaten him or both of them. It’s not uncommon she can surprise people with her cunning and smarts, well hidden under her playful and defiant surface.

Petra and Gravis are close partners in crime that form a powerful team in combat and presentation. While the tiefling speaks in lofty words, the dragonborn stands behind for added intimidation. While she strikes with her blade, he chants from his tome from a safe distance.

[Appearance notes]
Tall, but not too burly in the shoulders. Her scales are dark blue or charcoal black, mixing with lighter more earthy tones in the front. The scales on her back, tail, and back of the head are additionally hardened with naturally growing crystal that is predominantly black or semi-translucent. The translucence is mostly visible on her horns that at the ends show the bone of her skull underneath the crystal. Her eyes are violet, but reflect light in a way that makes them seem multicoloured (violet/blue/green, like a slight holo effect).

When transforming into her form of dread, the crystals grow rapidly about her body forming a sort of second armour to aid her in battle, and her eyes start to drip with black ichor out of the strain of the transformation.

She wears black/dark robes and uses bones as decoration. There’s not much other flair in her clothing. The symbols she can wear would resemble an X (the number “10”). Her weapon is a black rapier with a bone + crystallized hilt.

[if you know the series, her character is heavily inspired by The Locked Tomb series]
