The Revenants: Kingslayer (DnD 5e homebrew)

Yana was born in Savonia, a country with a warm climate of never-ending plains, shores rich in marine trade, and near-desert sands in the far north. Her family lived and worked near the docks and were one of the more respected fishermen in the area.
She didn’t get to enjoy much of these privileges for too long in her life, as during childhood a war has broken out with The Empire, a high-elven force from the neighbouring continent. Her home hasn’t known peace since, and even though the war has calmed down over the years, she lived a life under constant occupation, an Empirian rule over her people’s freedom.

Her family survived the initial raid, but had to comply and work for the enemy to sustain themselves, officially never stepping out of line. Yana and her brother, together with many other people, joined the resistance that has quickly formed to relay information about the enemy to other places on the continent and to ruin their plans whenever they could without being caught.

The siblings managed to form a small artificer’s den underground where they worked to create tools, weapons, or armour for both the Empire and their own. In secret they gathered and analyzed Empirian tech and artifacts, hoping to adapt their magic and use for their own purposes. One day they got hold of a piece of crucial equipment from a dreadnought anchored nearby. It seemed powerful and they intended to turn it into a weapon. Unfortunately, the device’s magic was too unpredictable and the prototype ended up blowing up their home, killing her brother in the process, and nearly burying Yana alive. The explosion blasted her body and scarred her irrevocably.

Yana grabbed the now dormant device and ran, using the chaos of the destruction to slip past the guards and escape the borders of her country using her one and only chance. She hid away in the Aegeraum Kingdom where she managed to find aid for her wounds and created a device to more-or-less regain her eyesight and strength. Her mission now is to figure out what the device does and get it to someone who can help her finish what she and her brother had started. In particular, she needs to learn what are the small, mysterious, red crystals embedded along its surface that pulsate like a heartbeat.

[Ancient times]
The story takes place on a continent once ruled by four main races: elves, dwarves, nagas, and [xxx]. The world struggled in a war with dragons, who brought all the other races as their armies to the continent (including humans and beastfolk). The conflict forced the four ruling peoples to either fight or live underground, leaving whole systems of tunnels and cities below the surface, as well as defend fortresses and magic towers all around the land.

At the peak of the conflict, a group of archmages performed a ritual spell that destabilized magic across the continent. In one blast, all the dragons were turned to stone, the elves’ near-immortality was taken away, and the nagas and [xxx] ceased to exist. Since then, no one has seen an intelligent dragon in at least a thousand years. Having no way to escape the continent and no dragonfolk to rule them, the numerous other races started to call the war-ruined land their new home, while the elves became divided into subterranean drows and surface kingdoms.

Elves and humans eventually began rediscovering magic and “standardized” the division into specific schools. Although each culture had their own depictions and names for the Gods, the pantheon was somewhat classified. A number of countries and kingdoms were formed throughout the continent, ranging from racially diversified regions, to those solely human, or elven, or else.

[Present day]
A war always finds its way into peoples’ lives, sooner or later. After about a thousand years of relative peace, a new threat has come to the continent in the form of heavily-armoured dreadnaughts, never-before known magic weapons, and cunning infiltrators, all under the name of The Hazarian Empire. They hit the shores hard and quickly gained land in several countries, before meeting strong resistance and halting war efforts for the next ~20years of occupation. Those not actively influenced by their presence had already started to wave their hands at the war, while the Empirian spies make their way further into the continent, causing damage no one is even aware of… until a few seemingly random groups of people began to take action against this stagnancy.

[Personality]
Miryana always introduces herself per the shortened name of Yana. She’s paranoid of people backstabing her and never really trusts anyone fully, or at least she hasn’t found anyone to trust yet after her escape from under the Empire’s rule. She’s not great with people as her appearance usually scares them off and she sees an enemy in everyone first. This is not an ideal way to be, and she knows it, but she’s not here to make friends. Acquaintances and partners in crime, that’s more like it.

Because of all this prejudice and constant paranoia, deep down Yana craves acceptance and safety, but she doesn’t usually allow these thoughts to muddle her focus. She does have a more charming and sweet side, as she puts great care and love into maintaining and interacting with a snake construct she created as her companion years ago. His name is Coilspring. She can also be quite protective over the people she finds worth working with.

She’s good with animals and currently has a horse named Łatka/Patch.

[Appearance notes]
Yana appears to be bigger than her frame really is as she wears her hair unkempt and wild, flowing past her waistline. She constantly wears a thick cape sewn out of different pieces of fabric that covers up her gear and body. The goal here is to make her look unappealing and average. Her actual body is actually quite fragile.
Under all those layers of clothing there is a whole-body armour she created together with her brother. It’s an arcane armour with a gem in the middle of her chest that serves as a lightning weapon. She always hides Coilspring wrapped around her waist or over her shoulders, carries a bag of holding and a metal quarterstaff.
The device on her left eye is magical and she doesn’t see through that eye without it. It can cast Identify and lets her look through Coilspring’s eyes.
