The Revenants (DnD 5e homebrew)

They were born in the deepest forests of the continent among a small tribe. Though most firbolg families of the wilderness usually prefer to stay hidden from the outside peoples, their tribe lived close to some pre-war relic which attracted travelers and mages alike once in a few years. Enoch was inspired by one archaeologist’s visit who spoke of the many wonders they’d discovered, and the young firbolg set out with them to the Bone Valley – a ruined pre-war city that’s since become known for the remnants of its library and people devoting their lives to uncover and record knowledge. It was led by mostly elven, nerdy necromancers and librarians who harnessed bones of the ancient to help them uncover the ruins (and also sweep their floors. yes, walking skeletons who can make you tea). Enoch carries a spear made by the local bone-smithing masters and learned some necromantic tricks of their own.

After years of traveling the continent and tending to the Valley, they were noticed by an elven representative of the Black Legion (the continent’s neutral police with a mission), a martial arts master. They were taken in to learn the Way of the Shadow in order to help the Legion’s cause – to protect the secrets of the underground of the Legion’s headquarters. There is supposedly a tear between the material and lower planes, a possible gateway to the Nine Hells that’s been (as far as everyone knows) kept sealed for a few hundred years since. Aligning this with their goal to protect and record the world, they stayed close to their master hopefully to take over their duties at some point in the future, but continued to correspond with the Valley.

[Ancient times]
The story takes place on a continent once ruled by four main races: elves, dwarves, nagas, and [xxx]. The world struggled in a war with dragons, who brought all the other races as their armies to the continent (including humans and beastfolk). The conflict forced the four ruling peoples to either fight or live underground, leaving whole systems of tunnels and cities below the surface, as well as defend fortresses and magic towers all around the land.

At the peak of the conflict, a group of archmages performed a ritual spell that destabilized magic across the continent. In one blast, all the dragons were turned to stone, the elves’ near-immortality was taken away, and the nagas and [xxx] ceased to exist. Since then, no one has seen an intelligent dragon in at least a thousand years. Having no way to escape the continent and no dragonfolk to rule them, the numerous other races started to call the war-ruined land their new home, while the elves became divided into subterranean drows and surface kingdoms.

Elves and humans eventually began rediscovering magic and “standardized” the division into specific schools. Although each culture had their own depictions and names for the Gods, the pantheon was somewhat classified. A number of countries and kingdoms were formed throughout the continent, ranging from racially diversified regions, to those solely human, or elven, or else.

[Personality]
Despite their usual poker face and a serious, collected look, they’re quite open to people and maybe just a little bit too curious for their own good. They like to play along with jokes and often use a bit of sarcasm to contrast the first impression of a boring, stoic Tall Sheep. Very eager to explore and get into trouble if needed, but try to resolve everything with diplomacy. Fists only come afterwards. They would totally join a good tavern crawl to observe the locals, listen to the music, and maybe get into a fight for the fun of it, never touching the alcohol in the first place. Insight- and dex-based skills with a little bit of shady necro magic.

[Appearance notes]
Very tall, the ears usually hang on the sides. Androgynous body, long white eyelashes, big and dark eyes. Always wears some bone charm with them. Some lichen sometimes magically grows on their hair and clothes, which earned them the nickname of Porost (Polish for lichen). The tail is usually hidden under the clothes, but can be visible. The spear is solid (one-piece) bone weapon. Clothing can be changed, but it’s Legion’s black and gold themes.
